What the result means
Round pots use the cylinder formula, square pots use side × side × height, rectangular pots use length × width × height.
Soil needed equals the pot volume; in practice you fill to 2–3 cm below the rim, so you may use slightly less.
Measure inside dimensions where possible, and treat tapered pots as an approximation.
1 litre is about 0.264 US gallons.
