Lavender — Care Guide & Growing Conditions

A fragrant Mediterranean shrub that needs full sun and very well-drained soil. 100% Local

Quick Facts

How to Care for Lavender

Watering

Let the soil dry well; water every 7–10 days once established.

Check the top of the soil with your finger or a meter before watering instead of following a fixed calendar. In brighter, warmer conditions Lavender uses water faster, while cool or shaded spots need a longer gap. Water thoroughly until it drains, then empty any water left in the saucer so the roots never sit in it.

Light

Lavender grows best in full sun light. Keep it where that level stays consistent through the day, and avoid sudden moves that can shock the plant.

If light is too weak, growth becomes thin and stretched; if direct midday sun is too strong, leaves can scorch. Rotate the plant every few weeks so all sides receive even light.

Fertilizing

Feed with a very light feed, once or twice in spring. Always water the soil first so fertilizer does not burn dry roots, and dilute to the strength recommended on the label.

Most plants only need feeding during active growth and should be left alone in the dormant season. Overfeeding causes salt build-up and leaf-tip burn, so when in doubt, feed less.

Repotting

Plan to repot every 1–2 years, in spring. Move into a pot only one size larger, using gritty, alkaline, well-draining mix.

Repot when roots circle the drainage holes or the plant dries out unusually fast. Water lightly after repotting and keep the plant out of strong direct sun for a week while it settles.

Common Problems

Root Rot

Root rot appears as soft, dark, bad-smelling roots, wilting despite wet soil and rapid yellowing. Let the mix dry more between waterings, use gritty, alkaline, well-draining mix, and repot into fresh mix after cutting away any mushy roots.

Leggy Growth

Leggy growth means the plant is stretching for light with long, weak stems and few leaves. Pinch back the tips and move Lavender into brighter light to encourage bushy growth.

Poor Flowering

Poor flowering usually means too little light or too much nitrogen. Move the plant to brighter indirect light and use a fertilizer higher in phosphorus to encourage more blooms.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I water Lavender?

Let the soil dry well; water every 7–10 days once established. Always check the top of the soil first, because light, temperature and pot size all change how fast it dries.

Is Lavender toxic to cats and dogs?

According to the data used here, Lavender is mildly toxic to cats and dogs. If a pet has chewed the plant, contact your vet.

What light does Lavender need?

Lavender prefers full sun light. Keep that level consistent and avoid strong direct midday sun, which can scorch the leaves.

What temperature is best for Lavender?

Lavender grows best at 15–27°C (60–80°F). Protect it from cold draughts and sudden temperature swings.

When should I repot Lavender?

Plan to repot every 1–2 years, in spring. Repot sooner if roots circle the drainage holes or the plant dries out unusually fast.
